You want to eat healthy, homemade meals, but cooking always seems to take forever. Sure, the recipe says you should be eating in 30 minutes, but by that point you’re still chopping vegetables. The worst part? When the meal is finally ready, your kitchen looks like it was the victim of an epic food fight. Isn’t there a way to make dinner and save time in the kitchen?
As a Personal Chef and Culinary Instructor, I have to make the most of my time. Could you image if I were in your home cooking until 9 o’clock at night? Since efficiency is part of the job, I’ve garnered some practical cooking tips that are helpful to both the professional and novice chef.
Before you make you next meal, check out my top tips.
Save Time in the Kitchen:
- Mise En Place (like a pro): This French term means “everything in its place” and is used by chefs everywhere to manage and expedite the cooking process. To try it: scan your recipe(s) and start by chopping, measuring and preparing all of the ingredients. Transfer them to individual bowls, so you can add each one as it’s listed. When you start to cook, everything is already prepped and waiting for you.
- Sharpen Your Knife: This may seem like a no-brainer, but a sharp knife is one of the most essential kitchen tools for any cook. A sharp knife easily glides through everything from an onion to a piece of meat to a whole butternut squash. It’s also safer than a dull knife, which struggles to get through your food—and may end up catching your fingers. Sharpen your knife often and be ready to rock!
- Try a Mini Chop: You don’t need to fill your kitchen with lots of gadgets, but there are a few key tools (in addition to a sharp knife) that help you get meals on the table in no time. A Mini Chop is a small, easy-to-store machine that quickly chops garlic, onions, spices and fresh herbs. Since these are the ingredients you’ll probably need each time you cook, it will help you breeze through mise en place prep.
- Hire a Personal Chef: For some, no matter how much effort you put into making meals, it just doesn’t work out. Maybe you’re at the office late, your kids’ activities leave you exhausted or you just don’t like cooking. If this sounds like you, the best way to eat healthy each and every night is to let me do it for you! On average, a Personal Chef will save you about 7 hours each week. How’s that for a time-saving tip?
